Inside Le Freeport, Singapore’s fortified tax-free storage facility, a 66-million-year-old Triceratops skeleton sits in a private vault alongside gold bars and museum-quality art. Its owner, a young Singaporean collector named Chaw Wei Yang, is putting it up for sale through JOOPITER, the digital-first auction platform founded by Pharrell Williams. The estimate is $4.5 million to $5.5 million. That a prehistoric fossil is now being marketed through the same cultural infrastructure as luxury collectibles and fine art is not incidental. It is the point. Chaw has said publicly that of all the alternative assets he has encountered, dinosaurs are the most untapped from an investment standpoint. He is not alone in that view. Apex the Stegosaurus sold for $44.6 million at Sotheby's New York in July 2024, shattering the previous record of $31.8 million set by Stan the T. rex in 2020. The market’s trajectory is steep and shows no sign of leveling. Why Asia’s UHNW collectors are turning to prehistoric trophies Asian buyers have become an increasingly active force in this category, and the reasons are worth examining. Fine art collecting, particularly at the trophy end, carries significant cultural and institutional prerequisites — knowing the right galleries, the right fairs, the right names. Fossils carry none of that baggage. A Triceratops needs no context. It commands a room on its own terms, which makes it a remarkably efficient status object for a new generation of collectors building across categories rather than within them. JOOPITER’s Asia strategy That logic maps directly onto JOOPITER's expansion strategy. Founded in 2022, the platform has been pushing into Asia. In December 2024, it signed a memorandum of understanding with Innocean, Hyundai Motor Group’s marketing agency, to pursue strategic projects across Japan, China, and Thailand. For brand executives and investors tracking where UHNW attention is moving, the implication is worth considering. The same criteria driving fossil prices — provenance, institutional credibility, absolute scarcity — are the criteria underpinning trophy luxury acquisitions. When an asset class starts operating by luxury’s rules, it is usually because the same buyers have entered the room.
